Why assessing cognitive skills in children is important?

June 15,2020 by Anupma

Research has shown that cognitive skills are a decisive factor in an individual’s learning ability. When cognitive skills are weak, learning becomes a struggle. Many children become frustrated and find schoolwork difficult because they do not have the cognitive skills required to process information properly.

Our school systems expect kids to come cognitively ready and start working on reading, writing, spelling, and math. If some children are developmentally and cognitively not ready, they will struggle to grasp the basic concepts.

If we want our children to succeed in the school system, they need to be assessed for cognitive skills and simultaneously coached for the same. This will help them to build the foundational skills to learn the concepts and they will not need any extra tutoring or academic support beyond the classroom.

What cognitive skills do we assess?

Our comprehensive assessments using (SOI systems tools & products) evaluate comprehension, memory, problem-solving, evaluation, and creativity. Specific abilities are evaluated in these areas that relate to learning.

COMPREHENSION

This the ability to assimilate new material or to recognize material that has been encountered before. People in education use the term “comprehension” to mean the same as the Structure of Intellect term “cognition.”

MEMORY

Memory is the ability to recall previously cognized material. Memory is the counterpart to Cognition. Cognition is the ability to “take-in” information; Memory is the ability to “bring-back” information.

EVALUATION

Evaluation is the ability to make practical judgments or decisions. Evaluation is required in situations that involve incomplete information – either ambiguity or uncertainty.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

Problem-solving is the ability to arrive at a determinate answer from the information given. It is the ability used in rule-following.

CREATIVITY

Creativity is freedom of expression in writing, drawing, numbers, and more. It is the idea of “thinking outside the box.”

What are the benefits of this elaborate assessment?

The value of SOI-based cognitive skills assessment is that it generates a detailed profile of the whole student. The profile shows exactly where the deficits are so that they can be targeted for improvement. The assessment also gives us information about the learning styles of the student.

A comprehensive, fully personalized cognitive skills training program is then developed to address an individual’s unique strengths and weaknesses. Low abilities can be improved and strong abilities can be further enhanced, creating a well-rounded student on the path to success!

Who can get assessed

Every child can benefit from taking the SOI assessment.

The beauty of this assessment is that it generates a unique profile and helps us to identify children with “Gifted abilities”, “Average and Above Average Abilities” and children who are struggling with school learning.

This unique feature helps us create personalized cognitive skills training programs for all students with their unique abilities and skillsets.

EmpowerKidz is providing free evaluations for a limited period of time to the families in our community to identify the unique potentials of their children and train them to be lifelong learners.

Once the children start showing progress on their cognitive Skills, we gradually introduce Multi-sensory Academic Instruction for reading, spelling, math and writing. Some of our students need enrichment and support in academics.

Our unique approach of merging cognitive skills assessments and training along with academic intervention helps us provide holistic services to children under one umbrella.
