Is Dyslexia Genetic – Dyslexia in Adults

Dyslexia is a common learning disability that makes it difficult to understand and master the ability to skillfully read and use verbal language. Dyslexia is a neurological condition that is inherited. This means that a child can inherit this condition from a parent, and it can impair their neurological system’s performance. So, Is Dyslexia Genetic? In a nutshell, yes, dyslexia is genetic. It is not uncommon for a child with Dyslexia to have an immediate family member who also has the condition. It is also not unusual for two or more children to have Dyslexia. A child’s ability to read is not solely determined by genetics; their surroundings also play an important role. Unfortunately, unless children with Dyslexia get the proper treatment in the earlier stages, they can grow up to be poor readers as adults. On a positive note, if the child gets the proper treatment early in life, they are most likely to have milder symptoms.

Dyslexia in adults has been linked to changes in their genes, which affect the development of the parts of the brain involved in communication. This is one of the reasons why dyslexia often runs in families. Dyslexia in adults may be difficult to identify if they dropped out of school before the condition was diagnosed. If we as parents have not been diagnosed but suspect that we may have had Dyslexia because we disliked school or dropped out, school could have been a very unrewarding and difficult place to be in.

Dyslexia in adults may experience the following symptoms:

  • Inability to concentrate on a single task
  • Lack of ability to plan
  • Learning is more effective when it is done visually or through hands-on experience.
  • Feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of filling out a lengthy form
  • Stress has a strong influence on an individual.
  • Having a low sense of self-worth.

If we suspect we have Dyslexia but are unsure, we can easily be tested for it. We can ask a specialist for advice or a test. This could assist us in determining the cause of our child’s learning disabilities. Once a specialist has tested the severity of our disability, they can come up with a proper diagnosis for our child. Treatments could include;

  • Proper screening for Dyslexia
  • Training and tutoring using a customised approach
  • Additional training to build self-esteem and confidence
  • Vision, hearing, and reading tests
  • Psychological tests
